On a snowy winter day in Jönköping, we met with Goran, a Bulgarian General Practitioner who moved to Sweden just a few months ago. Today, he lives and works in Jönköping, a charming city in the south of Sweden, located by Lake Vättern.

Although he is still new to the country, Goran does not regret his decision. On the contrary, he shares how warmly he has been welcomed into both Swedish society and the Swedish healthcare system.

“You are free and you can do whatever you want”

Goran had several reasons for moving to Sweden. When asked what mattered most, his answer was clear: work-life balance.

“The most important reason was having a better balance between work and personal life. Here, you actually have time after work. You are free, and you can do whatever you want.”

For Goran, the change has meant more personal time, less stress, and a feeling of freedom that he did not experience before.

What expectations did you have before moving?

Before moving, Goran already had a positive image of Sweden.

“I thought that people here are friendly and that I would have more free time after work. After being here for a while, I can say that it has exceeded my expectations. People are so nice here. They always want to help you.”

The kindness and helpfulness of Swedish people have been one of the biggest and most pleasant surprises for him.

Challenges

Moving to a new country and learning a new language is never easy. Goran admits that the first months were challenging.

“As everything is in the beginning, it was a bit challenging.”

However, he emphasizes that he never felt alone. He received continuous support from MediCarrera and from his new colleagues at the clinic.

Starting a new job in Sweden also includes a structured and supportive introduction period. New doctors are given time to adapt before independently seeing patients.

“During the introduction, we did a lot of things. We were introduced to the Swedish healthcare system and how it works, how to best meet patients, how to use the medical equipment here, and basically everything you need to know as a doctor.”

This gradual start helped him feel confident and safe in his new role.

    A Non-Hierarchical Healthcare System

One of the aspects Goran appreciates most is the working culture within Swedish healthcare.

“I think the working environment is very good here. When you need help from someone at work, everybody can help you because there is no hierarchy. You are on the same level as the nurses, other doctors, the managers, and so on. Everybody is so nice.”

The flat structure and strong sense of teamwork create a collaborative environment where everyone’s voice matters. For Goran, this non-hierarchical system has been a major positive difference.

    Considering the Same Journey?

Goran’s story is a powerful example of how moving abroad can open new professional and personal opportunities. A better work-life balance, supportive colleagues, a structured introduction, and a welcoming society have made his transition to Sweden a success.
