WORKING AS A MIDWIFE IN SWEDEN

In Sweden, midwives work mainly in public hospitals, maternity units and women’s health clinics, providing care throughout pregnancy, childbirth and the postnatal period. Their role is highly independent, while still involving close collaboration with obstetricians, nurses and other healthcare professionals.

Midwives are responsible for antenatal follow-up, supporting women during labour and delivery, monitoring both mother and baby, and providing postnatal care and breastfeeding support. Depending on the workplace, they may also work with contraception, sexual and reproductive health, gynaecological care and counselling. The profession has a strong focus on patient safety, continuity of care, prevention and supporting women and families throughout the entire maternity journey.

Before you register, please go through the list of requirements below:

  • To have a bachelor’s degree as midwife.
  • To be an EU citizen* OR have long-term residency in any of the EU member countries*.

If you are not an EU citizen and/or your title are not from EU countries*:

  • Your nurse university title must be recognised in any of the EU member countries.
  • You must have worked at least 3 years in any of the EU member countries AFTER your title had been recognized.
